The MDS Clinical Volume Report and the MDS Volume Report display information about MDS data submissions by nursing facilities in a state. This information can help you identify facilities that may be having problems meeting CMS's MDS data submission requirements. Of particular interest are facilities that have very low volume ratios, a large number of late/missing transactions, large fluctuations in their quarterly volumes, or large discrepancies between their OSCAR (Online Survey, Certification, and Reporting System) Census and MDS resident counts.

It is important to stress that the numbers on the reports should be used only as indicators of possible data problems. These statistics should NOT be considered conclusive evidence that a facility is out of compliance. Instead, these numbers should be used to focus investigations to find out where there may be problems and to educate facility staff to assist them in meeting the data requirements.

For data reported on or after January 15, 2001, the MDS Volume Report will no longer be produced. Information on the volume of MDS assessments will continue to be reported with the MDS Clinical Volume Report.
